"It, uh... it's... complicated," Doe stated after a minute, avoiding looking Niya in the eye. Was it because of the whole stumble situation? He really hadn't meant to make Doe uncomfortable...He wished that he'd look him in the eye, but instead, he seemed to be concentrating on his feet. "U-usually, I... I have to want it. The fire. B-but I didn't. It just... happened."
Niya frowned; that was a bit terrifying. If fire just sprouted out of nowhere, without Doe wanting to, who was to say it wouldn't one day accidentally catch him on fire? Or the ship? Or another person...fire freaked Niya out. Magic fire? Even more so. He supposed he understood now a little why he was so afraid of magic. That memory had been quite vivid...
He shook his head. Now wasn't the time. He still had to apologize for being weird on the dance floor. But instead, Doe said, "Niya, do you think that... I mean, have you ever..."
Niya tilted his head in question. What was Doe trying to ask? Apparently, he didn't know either because he stopped talking suddenly. And then, a moment later, he finally raised his eyes to meet his, and Niya smiled gently.
"Niya, don't... panic, okay?"
Those words weren't comforting at all. But of course, Niya nodded. Slowly, Doeteain moved closer, as close as they had been before. Niya's breath hitched again. What was this he was feeling? He couldn't remember ever feeling like this around anyone else before...
Chest to chest, the two stood there for a moment, and the Doe lowered his face so that he was basically speaking to Niya's shoulder. "I... it's weird. I feel... different, somehow. But-- it's only around you, I think." He smiled slightly, lacing his fingers through Niya's. "You're... more special than you seem to think."
Niya smiled an indulgent sort of smile and reached up his other hand, brushing some hair out of Doe's face. "What are you on about? I'm nothin' special at all," Niya said, "If anyone is special here, it's you. I don't know what it is about you, but...."
Niya paused, looking into Doe's eyes. They were like gems, he realized. Bright, shining blue gems. But much more beautiful than any gem Niya had ever seen. He swallowed slowly and then lowered his hand. "But you're different from everybody else, and in the best way possible. You're definitely one of a kind. I can definitely see what Condir saw in you."
Niya let the words sink in for a moment, and then, suddenly, grinned broadly at Doe. "In any case, should we head back to the party, or are you ready to retire for the night?"
