Niya had lead the way back to the ship rather quickly, careful to try and avoid any rubble that remained from the attack on the city. They had to move quickly, though. The crew that had gone ahead onshore had been slated to meet 10 minutes ago, and if they missed the boat back, they'd be stranded in Ciimre and Niya could kiss his life goodbye.
Thankfully, though, the pirates were still there. He quickly walked up to the mate he'd been talking to early. "What did I tell you?" [color-midnightblue]he said, [/color]"I knew we had a chance."
The other glared at him. "And what did we get out of it? I busted me bloody head and got a scar, that's what!"
"Well, I got us something!" Niya held up the vase he'd snagged. It wasn't anything special, that was for sure, and the other crewmate rolled his eyes at the pathetic display. "Oh, and I brought a new mate."
He nudged Doeteain forward. "Doe, meet some of the crew. They'll be your new family from now on."
"Hi," replied the crewmate. "Sorry about Niya. He's a bit of a...well. He's Niya. No helping that."
He held out his hand to Doe to shake. "My name's Eric." He shook the hand, and then climbed into the boat. "Now let's hurry. Mae is going to leave us behind if we don't speed up."
"Who all did we lose on shore?" Niya asked quietly, climbing into the boat and helping Doe inside. Once they were seated, he pushed off and the boat began heading for the ship.
"Jane and Belthor. Malachy, too."
Niya nodded and bit his lip, sending a quick prayer to the goddess for them. They always went into these raids knowing not all of them would make it back. But it always hurt, especially when you lost people like Jane and Belthor. They had only just gotten married a week ago. After this, they had planned on settling down somewhere and starting a family.
Finally, they arrived at the S.S. Chimera. "C'mon," Niya said to Doe, "Time to meet the Captain."

The attack on Ciimre went as well as was to be expected. Maelyn had thought they were ready. After all, her crew was always ready. Unfortunately, the rumours of Ciimre's forces seemed to get the best of them. They had practically given up before the raid had even begun; merely seeing the city on the horizon had spooked most of them.
If Maelyn had been a less stubborn sort, she would have relented to her crew's desires. However, she was not; she would not let the fears of this crew get the better of her. She knew that they would lose men and women. They did at every raid. Ciimre would be no different, and she'd be damned if she'd let any of them think even for a second that she was spooked. King Hoven's kingdom was a formidable foe, by any means, which meant that it would be a good learning experience. If it turned out to be a failure, at least then they'd realize it was time to stop slacking off as they tended to do.
Maelyn leaned over the bulwark, her eyes scanning the shore. The crew she'd sent on foot were meant to arrive a few minutes ago. She counted them quickly. They were missing four... She hoped despite herself that those four were merely stragglers, although she knew the odds against that.
"We set sail in five!" she called to them. They gave shouts of acknowledgement and agreement, although she could tell they, too, wanted to stay longer in hopes their shipmates would show. It was always like this.
Five minutes later, Maelyn leaned back over the same edge. There were two more bodies on shore now: Niya and a boy she didn't recognize. Maelyn didn't tend to forget faces, either. Niya had obviously found him while in Ciimre and taken some sort of liking to him, in typical Niya fashion.
"Time to meet the Captain," Maelyn heard Niya say. That was her cue. Almost as if appearing from nowhere, she announced her presence, head held high. As any dramatic pirate story would tell you she should be, Maelyn was clad in knee-high leather boots, dark brown pants, and a maroon corset that wasn't laced tightly enough to be standard. It was a silly thought, doing battle with one's breathing restricted. It was no wonder female pirates were so uncommon with their ridiculous choices of fashion.
"Whose turn is it to meet me?" Maelyn asked calmly, her eyes setting upon the new boy. He was young, no older than eighteen. Tiny, too. He looked frail. Actually, he looked like he'd already been broken. "I take it you're the newcomer. Where are you from?" She held her hand up before he could reply. "Turn." When he stared, wide-eyed and motionless, she twirled her finger impatiently. "Spin around," she repeated. He slowly obeyed, and as he turned, she spotted a familiar-looking tattoo of wings on his back. She knew that mark. She'd seen it before...
"Evariic, then?" she said, casting a questioning look to Niya. He didn't tend to be trusting of magic. "Interesting... Well, I think you would be a useful addition to our crew. Come on, then," she ushered the remaining members of the crew, "All of you." As the last man passed her, she set her hand on his shoulder. "Tell me who we've lost."

Doeteain was content to stand behind Niya and let him talk to the other guy. He wasn't much for meeting new people; he never met anyone. Meeting Niya was plenty shock enough for one day, thank you. If he had to meet other people who went against everything he knew about the world, he might die on the spot. Surprises were no fun for people who spent twelve years in a row in the same cell, where the only surprise was which method of torture would be utilized that day.
Doeteain couldn't help but squeak when Niya suddenly nudged him forward, seemingly uncaring of Doeteain's thoughts of sticking to the background.
"Doe, meet some of the crew. They'll be your new family from now on."
"Hi. Sorry about Niya. He's a bit of a...well. He's Niya. No helping that. My name's Eric." Eric extended his hand, and when Doeteain didn't move to take it, he grabbed Doeteain's hand and shook it anyway. "Now let's hurry. Mae is going to leave us behind if we don't speed up."
"Who all did we lose on shore?" Niya asked quietly as he helped Doeteain into the boat. Doe's stomach churned almost immediately as the boat rocked, the water beneath them giving way. Almost immediately, he latched back onto Niya. He didn't do well with water. As the boat was pushed away from shore-- and thus, safety-- he wriggled his way closer to Niya, shooting the water a look of sheer terror.
At last, they reached the ship.
"C'mon, time to meet the Captain."
Doeteain didn't relinquish the death grip he had on Niya's arm as he climbed onto the ship. Suddenly, a rather intimidating woman stood in front of him, and he had to fight the urge to duck behind Niya.
"Whose turn is it to meet me? I take it you're the newcomer. Where are you from?" Doeteain opened his mouth to respond, but Maelyn cut him off with a raise of her hand. "Turn," she commanded. Doeteain didn't know what she meant, and he blinked at her. "Spin around." Startled, he quickly released Niya and turned. "Evariic, then? Interesting... Well, I think you would be a useful addition to our crew. Come on, then," she ushered the remaining members of the crew, "All of you."
As she passed by him, Doeteain looked back to Niya, and then peered over the edge of the ship. In an instant, he was back to holding Niya's hand.
"I don't-- I wasn't thinking-- I may have forgotten, but... I don't do well with water," he admitted, tugging Niya away from the edge.

Niya nearly jumped when Mae seemed to appear out of nowhere.
"Whose turn is it to meet me? I take it you're the newcomer. Where are you from?"she asked, clearly startling Doeteain. "Turn," she commanded and Doe blinked at her for a moment. Niya stifled a laugh. "Spin around." Doe did as she commanded and Niya waited to see what Mae was going to say. "Evariic, then? Interesting... Well, I think you would be a useful addition to our crew. Come on, then," she ushered the remaining members of the crew, "All of you."
Niya managed a smile. "Told you she wouldn't turn you away, even if she does seem a bit scary."
Doeteain moved over to look over the edge of the ship's railing, but then, suddenly, bounced away and grabbed Niya's hand. The blonde blinked in question.
"I don't-- I wasn't thinking-- I may have forgotten, but... I don't do well with water," Doe stuttered out.
"You're serious?" Niya asked, "That's...erm...well, that's a little important. You're going to be living on the water for a while..."
Niya scratched the back of his head with the hand that wasn't being held. How was he supposed to allay Doe's fears? What was the comforting thing to say in moments like this? "Well," he began, "You don't have to worry. I won't let you fall in, okay?"
He grinned brightly and pulled Doeteain towards the hold of the ship. "C'mon. Let's go see the ship's physician. I want to get this shoulder looked at. Kinda smarts now. And you can get your wing looked at and whatever other injuries you have. Then, we're going to have some food. Alright?"
He stopped short for a moment, though, and turned back to Mae, "Oh, and Captain, I got some booty! It's in the little boat. A vase. Gotta be worth something right?" Smiling, he quickly ducked inside, his hand clutching tightly to Doe's. He could get used to having him around, he decided. Most of the other ship's mates were at least in their mid-twenties, to their fifties. Doe seemed to be much closer to him in age. Hell, he seemed to actually be even younger than him.
"How old are you, Doe?" he asked, "And how did you ever manage to end up in that gods-forsaken hole in the castle?"

"You're serious? That's...erm...well, that's a little important. You're going to be living on the water for a while..." Doeteain ducked his head, feeling his face heat up in embarrassment. He'd never been on a ship. In fact, the last time he'd even seen one had been a dozen years ago. It simply hadn't occurred to him, somehow, that going out to sea involved an actual sea. "Well, you don't have to worry. I won't let you fall in, okay?" Doe's eyes snapped up to see Niya grinning brightly, and he managed a hesitant but nonetheless grateful smile. "C'mon. Let's go see the ship's physician. I want to get this shoulder looked at. Kinda smarts now. And you can get your wing looked at and whatever other injuries you have. Then, we're going to have some food. Alright?"
At the mention of food, Doeteain's hand rose to his neck, his fingers brushing against the red mark the collar had left. Food sounded nice... They paused as Niya shouted something to the captain before he started walking again.
"How old are you, Doe? And how did you ever manage to end up in that gods-forsaken hole in the castle?"
Doeteain thought for a moment. He knew twelve years had passed since the prince had first fallen ill, and he'd been.. five at the time? That sounded right. So he was seventeen now then, unless he'd forgotten how to do math, which was entirely possible.
"I think I'm seventeen now," Doe said, casting a glance around the ship. He seemed to be the youngest on board by far, with only Niya being remotely close to his age. "And I've been in the castle my whole life. I never met him, but the story I heard was that my father owed the king a debt. I was the payment. When the prince got sick... the king decided my tears were their best hope. But they're not worth much unless they're genuine..." He trailed off, leaving Niya to figure how that had landed him in the dungeon as they walked, Doe clinging tightly to Niya's hand.
"What about you?" Doe asked suddenly. "How old are you? And why are you here? You're not... You don't act like what I thought a pirate would act like."

"What about you?" Doe asked suddenly. "How old are you? And why are you here? You're not... You don't act like what I thought a pirate would act like."
"What, 'cause I don't rape and kill willy-nilly?" Niya returned with a grin, "I'll take that as a compliment. In any case, I'm nineteen. I think. At least, that's what the physician told me. I really don't know when my birthday is or anything. I don't know where I'm from or what happened to my memory. All I know is this place, and this family. Whatever I had before, it's gone and so this is all I've got. I'd go to the ends of Samadhi for Mae or any one of the crew."
Niya shrugged and then stopped as they arrived at the physician's rooms. He knocked once, then swept in. "Hello, Doc," Niya greeted, "Lots of injuries this time?"
The doctor turned from the patient he'd just finished looking at and faced him. "Why, yes, dear boy. Which is why I must insist you leave me to my work--"
"But doc, I need you to look at my friend here." He pulled Doe forward. "Oh, and I need you to look at this arrow wound I got as soon as you finish with him. Doe helped me out, but it still hurts."
The doctor looked over his spectacles at Doeteain, then moved around him to glance at his back. "A member of the Evariic?" the doctor stood back on his heels. "Interesting...Niya, go sit over there until I'm finished. And for the love of the goddess....don't touch anything."
Niya rolled his eyes but did as he was told, preparing to wait until the doctor had taken care of Doe's injuries.
"Now child, tell me what hurts the most?"

Although he didn't bother commenting, that still didn't sound very piratey to Doeteain. He'd thought pirates were supposed to be rough and dirty and missing an eye. Quietly, Doe followed Niya into what was apparently the physician's rooms. He was content to let Niya banter with the doctor, but apparently, they weren't.
"A member of the Evariic?" the doctor said. Did everyone know what the mark on his back was? It was weird. Doeteain couldn't help but wonder how many others like him there were. "Interesting...Niya, go sit over there until I'm finished. And for the love of the goddess....don't touch anything." Doe watched Niya, immediately missing having the pirate at his side. He didn't feel comfortable with being inspected by a complete stranger, especially without the first person he remotely trusted next to him. "Now child, tell me what hurts the most?"
Doe glanced at Niya. He'd told him to put away the wings, but those were what he really wanted taken care of. He dropped his eyes to the floor and concentrated. Slowly, the orange wings unfurled from his back. One of them gave a light flap before settling against his back, but the other-- the broken wing-- gave a shudder, hanging crookedly.
"Umm. M-my wing's broken," he said, wrapping the broken wing around himself. The wings were huge, and he didn't want to smack into anything with a wing that was already in so much pain.
"Let me take a look," the doctor muttered. Doe flinched when the cold hands met his wing, the appendage giving a twitch of discomfort. "Just a moment..." While the doctor moved to grab something, Doe shot Niya a look of uncertainty. Suddenly, something pressed against his wing, and it shot out, smacking straight into the doctor and knocking him over.
Doeteain turned and looked at the doctor with teary but apologetic eyes. He definitely hadn't meant to do that-- it had hurt him probably as much as it had hurt the doctor-- but he didn't like things touching his wings. They were hypersensitive, and they were already in enough pain.
"Um-- I-- I'm sorry," Doeteain said, "I just-- I don't..." He had no idea what to say, and he looked back to Niya, biting his lip. How was he supposed to explain assaulting the physician?

Niya had begun fiddling with something on one of the shelves when suddenly, Doe's wings got unfurled. For a moment, it became pretty crowded in the room, as the wings were somewhat huge. Niya nearly dropped the knick-knack he'd been holding and only really quick reflexes stopped that from happening; the doctor would have been so irritated with him.
"Let me take a look," the doctor muttered. Doe flinched when the cold hands met his wing, the appendage giving a twitch of discomfort. "Just a moment..."
Apparently, the doctor's hand squeezed the exact wrong spot and the wing suddenly lashed out, catching the doctor unaware and sending him to the ground. Niya quickly put away the knick-knack and moved over to help the doctor stand back up.
"Um-- I-- I'm sorry," Doeteain said with teary and apologetic eyes, "I just-- I don't..."
"No worries, dear boy," the doctor said, dusting off his robes, "I should have seen that coming."
Niya snorted. "Nice hit, Doe," he said, and the doctor whapped him on the back of the head.
Niya made a face and rubbed the back of his head. "You might want to leave the room, Niya," the doctor said a minute later, all seriousness once more, "I'm going to have to use magic to fix this..."
Niya froze and bit his lip. He hated being around magic. He really did. But at the same time...he didn't think he wanted to leave Doe. He'd only known him a short while, but he felt distinctly protective of him. The poor kid had been tortured, for goddess's sake. He deserved to have someone who wanted to make sure that he was okay. And right now, it looked like Niya could possibly fit that bill.Besides, Niya had to admit, he was a little lonely on the ship sometimes. It'd be nice to have an new friend to look after.
"I...I think I'll stay. Just make it quick." He moved over and took Doe's hand. "And you make sure you don't kill the Doc. He's not a lot to look at, but we kinda need him around."
The doctor gave him a look, but eventually shook his head and began chanting, his hand hovering over the wing this time rather than actually touching it. He'd learned his lesson about that the first time.
Niya held his breath and waited for the unmistakable sensation of magic to fill the room. When he felt it, his grip on Doe's hand tightened a little, but other than that, he kept calm. Finally, the magic receded and Niya blew out a breath.
"There. Better?" the doctor asked with a kindly smile before moving over to some shelves and beginning to pull down various salves and bandages. "Now, it's your turn, Niya. Let me see your wound."
Niya slowly disentangled his hand from Doe's and then began working to pull off his shirt. He winced when the movement jostled the injury, but he'd had worse. And it wasn't too bad, thanks to Doe's healing tears.
Niya shivered as the cold hit his bare chest. Niya supposed he should be self-conscious about the giant star-shaped scar that marred his chest, but he wasn't. Not at all, in fact. But he didn't particularly like taking off his shirt, if only because he got cold too easily. "Hurry it up, doc. It's bloody freezing in here."
The doctor rolled his eyes. "Don't be ridiculous. You're just a wimp. And you can't rush perfection. Hold still."
A moment later, Niya yelped as the cold salve met the injury and he tried not to squirm. It wasn't that it was particularly painful. Just...incredibly uncomfortable. Finally, the doctor wrapped the wound in bandages. "One of these days," the doctor said, "I hope you get over your fear of magic long enough for me to actually heal you. Do you have any idea how tiresome it is trying to gather enough herbs and other materials to make your medicines?"
"That'll never happen, Doc," Niya said with a grin, "You should get used to it. Besides, it's easier to learn from one's injuries when you actually have to suffer through the healing process, don't you think?"
The doctor finally finished and Niya quickly grabbed his shirt and put it on. "Alright, time to eat!" he said, helping Doe to his feet and pulling him out of the physician's quarters. "See you!"
The mess hall wasn't too far from the physician's quarters, thankfully, and they arrived just in time for dinner to be hot and ready. Niya took a deep breath. "Smell that, Doe? Perfection. I bet you're starving. What did they feed you in that awful place?"

"You might want to leave the room, Niya. I'm going to have to use magic to fix this..."
Doe's eyes snapped to Niya, his gaze worried. He didn't want Niya to leave. He knew this guy was a doctor and he was just doing his job, but Doeteain still didn't want to be left alone with him. He couldn't help it; he wasn't prone to trusting older men in positions of authority. In fact, he wasn't much prone to trusting anyone except Niya, it seemed.
"I...I think I'll stay. Just make it quick." Niya moved over and took his hand, and Doe felt himself relax a little. "And you make sure you don't kill the Doc. He's not a lot to look at, but we kinda need him around."
While Doeteain gave Niya a look that clearly stated it had been accidental, the doctor began chanting. A warm buzzing spread through Doe as his wing slowly fit back into its intended position.
"There. Better? Now, it's your turn, Niya. Let me see your wound."
While Niya pulled off his shirt, Doe flapped his wing a couple times. It still felt weak, but that was probably more from disuse than the injury it had sustained. He turned to shoot the doctor a bright smile, but he paused when his eyes landed on Niya-- more specifically, an interestingly shaped scar on his chest. He didn't think scars like that formed for no reason; he wondered what could have caused it. Was Niya from a special clan or tribe like Doe was?
"One of these days, I hope you get over your fear of magic long enough for me to actually heal you. Do you have any idea how tiresome it is trying to gather enough herbs and other materials to make your medicines?"
"That'll never happen, Doc. You should get used to it. Besides, it's easier to learn from one's injuries when you actually have to suffer through the healing process, don't you think?"
Doeteain's wings flattened behind him briefly before he retracted them. Niya didn't like magic? Was Doe magical? He wanted Niya to like him. Or, rather, he didn't want Niya to dislike him. He liked the idea of having an ally on this strange ship, and he rather wanted that ally to be Niya. He made a mental note to learn how normal humans were meant to behave and follow suit. For starters, he knew that meant no crying to heal people, no playing with fire (which he hadn't planned on, anyway), and certainly no wings. Maybe he'd see if anyone had a shirt he could wear so that the marking didn't give him away.
"Alright, time to eat!" Niya said, suddenly tugging at him. "See you!" Doeteain followed along complacently to what was apparently the mess hall, not too far from the physician. "Smell that, Doe? Perfection. I bet you're starving. What did they feed you in that awful place?"
"Umm. Bread? And if the prince could get out of bed, sometimes I'd get soup..." Doeteain trailed off again. What did normal humans eat? He wanted to be normal. Or at least normal enough that he didn't scream magic and scare Niya away. But how was he supposed to do that? He hardly even knew how to be a normal Evariic, let alone a normal something he wasn't! He almost groaned; this was so difficult. And he'd have to keep this up forever... It was going to be hard. "Why are you afraid of magic, Niya?" Doe asked suddenly. After all, maybe then he'd know what in particular he should avoid.

"Why are you afraid of magic, Niya?" Doe suddenly asked.
Niya shot him a look and moved to grab a tray of food. He loaded one for Doe, too, making sure to get a little bit of everything the cook had to offer. They'd just raided a rather rich farming settlement not too long ago, and so they had more food than normal. Usually, they were lucky if they got gruel and bread, but even that sometimes tasted good with the right kind of ingredients.
"Well," he began once they'd found a place to sit, "I think it has something to do with whatever happened to me before all this. Maybe even related to the big scar I've got. You saw it, right? Big, kinda shaped like a star?"
He bit into his roll and chewed thoughtfully. "I dunno. It's just...whenever I'm in the same room as magic, I feel this pressure. This anxiety. Kind of like anticipation, and not the good kind. It's really strange. I've pretty much just learned to accept that I won't ever feel comfortable around magic."
Niya scratched his head, somewhat in embarrassment. "But, y'know, it's kind of different with you. I don't feel nearly as nervous. Certainly don't feel threatened. In fact, I just feel kind of...protective? I don't mean that to seem weird...just...what I mean to say is, you don't scare me like other magic does. I don't think you have a mean bone in your body."
The roll finished, Niya moved on to the stew that had been prepared for the crew and took several bites. Mostly, he was just trying to hide how red his face was from that strange confession. It was true, though. He didn't feel afraid of Doe at all, and by all rights, it seemed like he should be, considering the fact that he had just healed him with his tears a few hours before. That was magic if Niya had ever seen it, but it didn't feel like the same magic. It was really odd.
"Eat up. Your stew's getting cold," he said.

I don't mean that to seem weird...just...what I mean to say is, you don't scare me like other magic does. I don't think you have a mean bone in your body."
It took every shred of concentration Doeteain had to keep his wings retracted while his face turned bright red. The confession was... weird. Coming from anyone other than Niya, Doe thought it might have even bothered him a little. After all, maybe if he were more threatening, that would be a good thing. Maybe he wouldn't have been used as a panacea for twelve years. But... hearing Niya say it, Doe just felt warm.
"Eat up. Your stew's getting cold."
Doeteain nodded and took a dainty bite of the stew. He paused, tasting it. And then he proceeded to devour everything on his tray in no more than five minutes. This stuff was probably the best food he'd ever tasted in his life. And here he'd thought the soup they gave him sometimes was miraculous!
Once he was finished, Doe sat back, feeling his face heat up again in embarrassment. He didn't realize until that first bite how truly hungry he'd been. Now, he looked down at his achingly full and slightly bloated stomach. Well, perhaps not slightly bloated. It normally looked like if he were to lie on his back, his stomach would touch his spine. So now it looked like he actually had a stomach.
Repressing the blush, Doeteain straightened up and looked to Niya. Niya said that Doe's magic didn't bother him so much, but he still couldn't help but feel weird about it, knowing it was such a bother for the pirate. He briefly considered asking for a shirt to borrow, but he stopped himself. It was already unpleasantly warm on the ship, and he knew that it would only be warmer come daytime. Plus, the idea of something restraining his wings in any sense would probably always bring back bad memories.
The second he was back on land, Doe told himself, he was going to fly. He had to learn. Although he'd never flown before or seen another Evariic, he simply knew that it was an ability he had.
Shifting, Doe pulled his knees up to his chest. "So, what happens next?" he asked Niya.

((OOC: Sorry this is so crap! ^^;; ))
Niya stared slack-jawed as Doe devoured everything on his plate in about five minutes. He hadn't known anyone could eat so fast. He blinked, and then slowly began eating his own food. It was rude to stare, wasn't it?
Still, he couldn't quite hide a smile. At least Doe was getting fed now. He couldn't imagine eating so little...
Well. Maybe he could a little bit. He frowned as he tried to hold onto a fuzzy memory, but then it was gone, and he shook his head.
He was pulled out of his musings as Doe shifted to pull his knees up to his chest. "So, what happens next?" he asked.
Niya thought about it for a moment. "I dunno. We could go to bed. There's a couple free bunks now, since some of our crew got...left behind...in Ciimre. Or I could show you around the ship, introduce you to more of the crew. Or we could just find someplace quiet and...I dunno. Relax."
Niya shrugged, then wiped at his face with a cloth, standing up. "Either way, I think we're done here at least."
He offered hi hand to Doe and then smiled, waiting for him to take it and decide where he wanted to go next.

"I dunno. We could go to bed. There's a couple free bunks now, since some of our crew got...left behind...in Ciimre. Or I could show you around the ship, introduce you to more of the crew. Or we could just find someplace quiet and...I dunno. Relax. Either way, I think we're done here at least."
Smiling, Niya offered his hand to Doeteain, who took it with a shy smile of his own. He may have only known Niya for a couple of hours, but he liked him. Niya was nice, and he held his hand when weird doctors wanted a look at his wing or when it suddenly hit Doe that he had a crippling fear of water. Doeteain stood, clutching onto Niya's hand tightly, and pressed against Niya's side.
"Why don't you pick?" Doe said, starting to pull Niya toward the door. "Although... I think I'm done meeting people. I-- I don't really... Everyone I've seen here is so... big, and scary. Well, except you. You're nice. I like you. Oh no. Wait-- is that weird? I'm sorry; I don't... I didn't-- I didn't really get many visitors, e-except the guards or the king, and-- and they're not the best conversation partners..."
Doeteain blushed again, pausing. "Umm-- anyway, I-I didn't mean it weird, s-so... yeah, y-you can pick what we do now..."
Doeteain turned to look at Niya, trying to quell the heat in his face. It seemed he just kept blushing. He'd never blushed before that he could remember, but he could hardly stop around Niya. It was... weird.

I didn't-- I didn't really get many visitors, e-except the guards or the king, and-- and they're not the best conversation partners..."
Doe blushed again and Niya laughed, ducking his face to hide that fact. He didn't want Doe to think he was making fun of him or anything. Because he wasn't. He rather liked Doe, too, and he didn't find him nearly as weird as Doe seemed to think of himself. Guess it came with being locked up for twelve years. Socialization was a tough thing to learn.
Besides, Niya didn't even have that excuse and he tended to be socially awkward, too.
"Umm-- anyway, I-I didn't mean it weird, s-so... yeah, y-you can pick what we do now..."
"Then how about we go and relax some place? Perhaps we can go to the Crow's Nest. Since you got wings, I bet you like being up high, right? Besides. I could take a shift as the lookout, which I'm sure Davey will appreciate. C'mon," Niya said, and then began heading towards the crow's nest.
Climbing was pretty painful, if Niya was being perfectly honest. His shoulder still smarted despite the care it had received, and he was sure it would continue to hurt for a while. Climbing rigging certainly wasn't going to make it better, he supposed. Still, they arrived a moment later and Niya sent Davey away.
The nest itself was small, but given Niya's and Doe's small stature, it was a pretty comfortable fit. And so what if he didn't mind being pressed against the other too much?
"It almost feels like flying up here," Niya asked, getting comfortably situated, "Do you fly, Doe?"

"Then how about we go and relax some place? Perhaps we can go to the Crow's Nest. Since you got wings, I bet you like being up high, right? Besides. I could take a shift as the lookout, which I'm sure Davey will appreciate. C'mon."
"The Crow's Nest...?" Doeteain asked quietly, letting Niya lead the way. They reached some sort of pole-- mast?-- and Doe released Niya's hand to watch him climb. His eyes followed Niya the whole way, until he spotted another man standing at the top of the large wooden pole, and his eyes widened. They were going up there? A wave of giddiness swept through him suddenly, and he again had to fight not to pop his wings out and try to fly then and there. After all, what if he failed? He could end up falling in the ocean.
The other pirate climbed down from what must have been the crow's nest, touching two fingers to his brow in greeting to Doeteain. Not knowing what else to do, Doeteain copied the motion, earning something of a crooked smile. Was this the Davey Niya had mentioned? As the man wandered off, Doeteain began pulling himself up the pole or mast-- he made a note to ask Niya what he should call these things-- to what had been dubbed the crow's nest.
Doeteain squeezed in next to Niya, although he all but hung out of the nest. Being up here... The nest swayed in the air, which rushed past his ears loudly. He felt like he was brushing against the clouds. It was so beautiful.
"It almost feels like flying up here. Do you fly, Doe?"
"I don't know," Doeteain said honestly. "I've never had the chance. But I feel like... I can. I just... don't know how yet." Bracing himself with one hand on the post, Doe stepped up onto the banister. The wind whizzed past him, around him, rustling the tattered pants that were the only clothing he wore. He almost wanted to jump. Not to die, just to feel the air rushing past. Feeling the cool wind on his face was exhilarating.
For the first time in seventeen years, Doeteain felt truly alive.
